What Is Text Adventure?

Text Adventure is a free, browser-based interactive fiction game where you explore a mysterious castle by typing commands. Navigate over 30 rooms, solve environmental puzzles, collect items, and choose between three distinct quest paths — each leading to a unique ending. Inspired by classic text adventures like Zork and Colossal Cave, the game features a green-on-dark terminal interface, a compass rose for navigation, and an auto-map that builds as you explore. No downloads, no sign-ups — just your wits and a blinking cursor.

How It Works

Type natural language commands to interact with the world. Move with directions (go north, climb stairs, enter door), examine objects (look at painting, examine chest), pick up items (take key, grab torch), use items on things (use key on door, combine oil with cloth), and talk to characters (talk to owl, ask about treasure). The parser understands many phrasings, and suggested commands appear for mobile players. Your inventory, auto-map, and quest progress track automatically, and you can save your game at any time.

🕹️ Zork (1980), one of the earliest text adventures, sold over 680,000 copies despite having no graphics whatsoever

Frequently Asked Questions

What commands can I type?

You can use movement commands (go north, south, east, west, up, down, climb, enter), interaction commands (examine, take, open, use, push, pull), inventory commands (inventory, drop, combine), and conversation commands (talk to, ask about). The game also suggests clickable commands based on your current room for easy mobile play.

How many rooms are there?

There are over 30 rooms to explore across Castle Thornwood, from the crumbling gatehouse and torchlit great hall to the wizard's tower, underwater grotto, dragon's lair, and the final throne room. Each room features unique descriptions, interactive objects, and atmospheric effects.

Are there multiple endings?

Yes! Three quest paths weave through the castle: rescue the imprisoned princess from the tower, find the dragon's legendary treasure hoard, or defeat the dark wizard in his sanctum. Each path requires solving different puzzles and collecting specific items. All three converge in the grand throne room for a final confrontation.
