What Is Number Crunch?

Number Crunch is a free online math puzzle game inspired by the classic Countdown numbers round. You're given a set of numbers and a target — combine them using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to hit the target before time runs out. The Countdown numbers game has been on UK TV since 1982, captivating millions with its deceptively simple format. Number Crunch brings that challenge to your browser with three difficulty modes and a daily puzzle you can share with friends.

How It Works

Choose your difficulty: Easy gives you 4 small numbers and a 2-digit target, Medium offers 5 numbers with a 3-digit target, and Hard follows classic Countdown rules with 6 numbers (a mix of small 1–10 and large 25, 50, 75, 100) and a target from 100 to 999. Tap a number, choose an operation, tap another number — the result becomes a new tile. Each original number can only be used once. You have 60 seconds to reach the target exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you solve number puzzles?
Start by examining the target and identifying which large numbers get you close. For example, if the target is 437, notice that 6 × 75 = 450, then work out how to make 13 from remaining numbers to subtract. Look for useful multiplication facts, think about factors of the target, and don't be afraid to experiment with different combinations.
What is the Countdown numbers game?
The Countdown numbers game is a segment from the long-running British TV show Countdown, on air since 1982. Contestants choose 6 numbers from small (1–10) and large (25, 50, 75, 100) sets, then try to reach a randomly generated 3-digit target using basic arithmetic. Each number can only be used once, and only whole positive intermediate results are allowed. Number Crunch follows these same rules.
How to get better at mental math?
Practice daily with timed challenges. Learn to factor numbers quickly (e.g., 375 = 3 × 125 = 15 × 25). Memorize multiplication tables to 15 × 15. Practice estimation to quickly identify which large numbers get close to your target. Use number bonds and complementary pairs. Even 5 minutes of daily practice with Number Crunch can noticeably improve your mental arithmetic speed within a few weeks.
