What Is Landscape Painter?
Landscape Painter is a free online digital painting tool that lets you create stunning landscape artwork right in your browser. No downloads, no sign-ups — just open and paint. Choose from 6 professional brush types, mix colors from a 48-color natural palette, work across up to 5 independent layers, and export your finished piece as a PNG.
How It Works
Select a brush type and adjust its size and opacity, then click (or tap on mobile) and drag across the canvas to paint. Use the color palette to pick shades, or tap the eyedropper to sample any color directly from the canvas. Guided templates — Mountain Lake, Sunset Beach, Forest Path, Desert Dunes, and Northern Lights — give you a ready-made sketch to build on. Undo up to 30 steps if you want to backtrack. When you're happy, hit Export PNG to download your painting, or Save to store it in the in-browser gallery.
Bob Ross's The Joy of Painting ran for 31 seasons and 403 episodes, teaching millions that anyone can paint landscapes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save my paintings? +
Yes! Your paintings are automatically saved to your browser's local storage (up to 5 paintings). You can also export any painting as a PNG file to your device using the Export button. Your gallery persists between sessions so you can always come back to your work.
How many brushes are available? +
There are 6 professional brush types: Round (general purpose), Flat (ideal for sky and water), Fan (perfect for foliage and grass), Palette Knife (great for textured mountains and rocks), Sponge (clouds and fog effects), and Spray (atmospheric mist and depth). Each brush has adjustable size (1–100px) and opacity (10–100%).
Can I paint with layers? +
Yes! You can use up to 5 layers, each with individual visibility toggles. Layers let you paint the sky separately from the mountains and foreground, making it easy to make changes without affecting your whole composition. You can also choose blending modes: Normal, Multiply (darkens), and Screen (lightens).
