What Is an IQ Test?

An IQ (Intelligence Quotient) test measures cognitive abilities and potential. This free online IQ test uses visual pattern recognition questions inspired by Raven's Progressive Matrices, one of the most well-validated and culturally fair measures of fluid intelligence. Each question presents a 3×3 grid of patterns with one missing piece — your job is to identify the logical rule and select the correct answer.

How It Works

The test consists of 20 questions that increase in difficulty across four levels: Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert. Early questions involve single rules like counting or rotation, while later questions combine multiple transformations that must be identified simultaneously. Your score is converted to an estimated IQ using a distribution model based on typical performance.

What is a good IQ score?

An IQ score between 90 and 109 is considered average. Scores of 110–119 are above average, 120–129 are superior, 130–144 are gifted, and 145+ is considered genius level. About 68% of the population scores between 85 and 115.

Are free online IQ tests accurate?

Pattern-based tests like this one correlate well with standardized IQ measures. However, a true IQ assessment requires a controlled environment and a licensed psychologist. Use this test as a fun estimate of your pattern recognition ability.

What is the average IQ?

The average IQ is 100 by definition. IQ follows a normal distribution with a standard deviation of 15, meaning about 95% of people score between 70 and 130.
