What Is Drum Machine?

Drum Machine is a free, browser-based 16-step drum sequencer that lets you build beats using eight distinct drum channels. Choose from Classic 808, Acoustic, and Electronic kits — all sounds are synthesized in real-time using the Web Audio API. No downloads, no plugins, no signup required. Adjust BPM, swing, velocity, and chain up to four patterns together to create full arrangements. The Roland TR-808 drum machine was produced for only 3 years (1980-1983) but has appeared on more hit records than any other drum machine.

How It Works

1. Choose a Kit

Select from Classic 808, Acoustic, or Electronic kits. Each kit changes all eight drum channels — Kick, Snare, Closed Hi-Hat, Open Hi-Hat, Clap, Rim, Tom, and Crash — to match the sonic character of that style.

2. Program the Grid

Click or tap any step in the 16-step grid to activate it. Click an active step again to cycle through velocity levels: soft, medium, and hard. Each channel has its own mute and solo toggles plus individual volume control.

3. Shape Your Sound

Use the swing control (0-75%) to add groove. Adjust the master gain and low-pass filter sweep to shape the overall mix. Set the pattern length to 8, 16, or 32 steps depending on the complexity you want.

4. Chain Patterns

Program up to four patterns (A/B/C/D), then use the Chain button to link them together. The sequencer plays through each active pattern in sequence before looping, letting you build full song structures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the drum sounds?

Yes! The drum machine includes three kit presets: Classic 808, Acoustic, and Electronic. Each kit completely changes the character of all eight drum channels. Switch between them using the kit selector buttons above the sequencer grid.

How do I adjust tempo?

Use the BPM slider to set tempo anywhere from 40 to 200 BPM. You can also use the Tap Tempo button — tap it rhythmically and the BPM will automatically match your tapping speed.

Can I chain multiple patterns?

Yes! The drum machine has four pattern slots (A, B, C, D). Program each pattern independently, then click the Chain button and select which patterns to include. The sequencer will play through each chained pattern in order before looping back.
